German Open postponed due to weather

BERLIN, May 7 (UPI) -- Only four matches were finished on Monday before the German Open women's tennis tournament was rained out, including Israeli Shahar Peer's match.

Thirteenth-seeded Peer won her match against crowd favorite Anna-Lena Groenfold, 6-1, 6-2.

Among the other winners were fourteenth-seeded Chinese Na Li, who overtook Russian Maria Kirilenko, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, France's Severine Bremond took out German wild card Sabine Lisicki, 6-2, 6-1, and Czech Lucie Safarova defeated Ukrainian qualifier Olga Savchuk, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0.

When the day was called, German wild card Tatjana Malek was in the lead in her match against Russian Vasilisa Bardina, 6-1, 4-3, and American Meghann Shaughnessy was ahead of Italian Tathiana Garbin, 7-6 (7-3), 0-2.

Four other seeds also had their matches postponed until Tuesday.

The winner of the $1.34 million French Open tune-up will receive a check for $181,980.
