MLS: New York 3, Real Salt Lake 3

SALT LAKE CITY, May 5 (UPI) -- Clint Mathis scored twice for Red Bull New York Saturday night, as the team battled Real Salt Lake to a 3-3 tie in Major League Soccer action.

New York hadn't given up a goal in its first four games and Salt Lake had been shut out in its previous three games -- two of them at home.

After Salt Lake's 0-2-2 start, team captain Jason Kreis retired and took over for John Ellinger as head coach.

In the first 90 minutes Saturday New, York took a 3-1 lead behind Matis' two goals and one from rookie Dane Richards. But Real Salt Lake Real scored two goals, one in the 90th minute and one in stoppage time, to salvage the tie.

New York fell to second place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Kansas City, which won its third straight earlier Saturday.
