RICHMOND, Va., May 4 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon won his fourth pole of the season Friday, grabbing the No. 1 starting spot for Saturday night's Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
It will be the fifth time this year Gordon has started out front in a Nextel Cup event. He was awarded the pole based on points when qualifying was rained out in Texas last month.
Gordon turned in a lap at the three-quarter mile oval in 21.386 seconds.
"I really didn't think that lap was going to hold up," Gordon said. "I can't believe the roll we're on and we're going to try and keep it going."
Carl Edwards recorded the second-best time while Scott Riggs and Jimmie Johnson will be on the second row. Kasey Kahne and Denny Hamlin will fill out the third row.
Gordon has two wins and eight top-10 finishes this season.
