PHILADELPHIA, May 3 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Phillies' closer Tom Gordon is having his ailing right shoulder examined, and missed the team's West Coast road trip Thursday morning.
The 39-year-old right-hander was sent back to Philadelphia for an examination by Dr. Michael G. Ciccotti, the team's director of medical services.
The decision was made after Gordon came to the ballpark Wednesday complaining of shoulder soreness.
"He said something about how his shoulder was real sore," Manager Charlie Manuel said on the team's Web site. "His shoulder was sore in spring training when we decided to shut him down. It was a little stiff and sore."
Manuel said the same problem forced the three-time All-Star to the 15-day disabled list last August.
"I've been concerned about it since spring training," Manuel admitted.
Gordon is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.82 and five saves this season. His fifth save came in Tuesday night's 6-4 victory over the Braves.
