
ARLINGTON, Texas, May 3 (UPI) -- Hideki Matsui hit an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning Thursday as the New York Yankees edged Texas 4-3 in the opener of a doubleheader.
Matsui finished with two hits and two RBI. Jason Giambi hit a solo home run, while Johnny Damon hit a sacrifice fly, and Melky Cabrera had a run and three hits for the Yankees, who have won three of their last four games.
The opener was a makeup game after Wednesday's contest was rained out.
The winner was reliever Luis Vizcaino (2-1). New York starter Andy Pettitte gave up two earned runs and five hits in six innings.
Gerald Laird and Sammy Sosa hit RBI doubles for Texas. Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a solo home run, while both Sosa and Mark Teixera had two hits for the Rangers, who have lost four in a row.
The loser was reliever Joaquin Benoit (0-1).
Texas starter Mike Wood gave three runs -- two earned -- in 6 1/3 innings.
