The altercation came during the final caution period on the white-flag lap of Sunday's Aaron's 499, when McMurray finished fifth just ahead of Harvick.

In a release, NASCAR said the two drivers were found to be in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock-car racing -- involved in an altercation with another competitor's car during a caution period) of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series rule book.

Neither driver was immediately available for a comment.

McMurray is seventh in the points race with 1,059 points, 462 behind leader Jeff Gordon. Harvick is two slots further back at No. 9 with 1,052 points.
