NEW YORK, May 2 (UPI) -- Guard Brandon Roy of the Portland Trail Blazers Wednesday was a near-unanimous winner of the NBA's Rookie of the Year Award.
The 6-foot-6 inch Roy was a first-round pick by Minnesota out of Washington in the 2006 draft, and then was dealt to the Trail Blazers for the draft rights to Randy Foye of Villanova.
Roy had per game averages of 16.8 points and four assists in 57 games.
"It's rare to see a rookie step in, assume a leadership role and become a go-to guy as Brandon did this past season," said Trail Blazers Coach Nate McMillan. "Brandon has a chance to become a very special player in this league."
Roy scored 20 or more points 16 times.
Toronto's Andrea Bargnani was second in the balloting by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, with 264 points. Rudy Gay of Memphis was third with 93 points.
Charlotte's Adam Morrison was fourth and Foye finished fifth.
