Top seeds cruise in Portugal tennis

ESTORIL, Portugal, May 1 (UPI) -- Top seeds Marion Bartoli and Francesca Schiavone each had straight-set wins Tuesday in first-round play of the $145,000 Estoril Open in Portugal.

Bartoli, the No. 1 seed, breezed past Neuza Silva, 6-2, 6-1, and Schiavone, the No. 2 seed, won, 6-1, 7-5, over Ivana Lisjak in their opening matches of the clay-court tournament.

No. 4 seeded Martina Muller won just four games in losing, 6-0, 6-4, to Caroline Wozniacki and eighth-seeded Eleni Daniilidou was down to Alberta Brianti, 6-4 3-1, when she retired because of a left calf strain.

No. 9 Flavia Pennetta stopped Arantxa Parra Santonja, 6-3, 6-1, and sixth-seeded Maria Kirilenko was tied, 3-6, 6-3, 2-2, with Nika Ozegovic when the match was suspended because of rain.

Other winners Tuesday were: Lourdes Dominguez Lino, Ruano Pascual, Greta Arn, Sofia Arvidsson, Anastasiya Yakimova and Gisela Dulko.

Dulko is coming off her first WTA Tour title, won last week in Hungary.
