TORONTO, May 1 (UPI) -- Jose Calderon scored 25 points Tuesday as Toronto avoided elimination with a 98-96 victory over New Jersey in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Bostjan Nachbar missed a three-pointer that would have given the Nets the win.
Richard Jefferson, who had 23 points, scored on a driving layup with 50 seconds to play, drawing the Nets within 95-91. Calderon then lost the ball and Vince Carter, who scored 30 points, sank one of his four three-pointers to trim the deficit to 95-94.
Toronto got three late free throws, including two by Chris Bosh with 25.5 seconds left. Mikki Moore tipped in a Carter miss on the other end.
Calderon didn't start but played the majority of the minutes after T.J. Ford left the game near the end of the first quarter with a stinger.
Jason Kidd didn't score until the 7:26 mark of the third quarter, but wound up with 11 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists.
Game 6 is Friday at New Jersey.
