SAN DIEGO, May 1 (UPI) -- John Patterson pitched six strong innings Monday, putting the Washington Nationals in position for a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Patterson (1-4) gave up only four hits and two walks, while striking out three to earn his first win this season. Chad Cordero pitched the scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

Austin Kearns went 2-for-4, knocking in a run and scoring for the Nats, who have won three of five. It was only the fifth Nationals win in their last 23 games against San Diego.

Jake Peavy (3-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Padres, striking out 10, while allowing three runs on six hits.

Terrmel Sledge and Josh Bard both homered for the Padres, who have lost six of eight.
