Muller, Loit open-day winners in Budapest

BUDAPEST, Hungary, April 23 (UPI) -- Germany's Martina Muller and France's Emilie Loit, two of the four top seeds, were opening-round winners Monday at the Budapest Grand Prix.

The second-seeded Muller, the 2002 champion, defeated Italian Maria Elena Camerin 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-5. Fourth-seeded Loit beat Czech Renata Voracova 6-4, 6-2.

Italian Karin Knapp upset eighth-seeded countrywoman Romina Oprandi 5-7, 6-2, 3-4, as Oprandi retired, while leading, due to a forearm injury.

One other first-round result saw Italian Alberta Brianti defeat Hungarian wild card Lucia Batta 6-2, 6-3.
