NEW YORK, April 18 (UPI) -- Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 by the NFL Wednesday for wearing a hat on Super Bowl media day featuring a company not affiliated with the league.
The all-pro Chicago Bear violated a longstanding policy that applies year-round at league games and events, which includes Super Bowl Media Day.
League spokesman Brian McCarthy told the Chicago Sun-Times it is the first time such a fine has been assessed, and that the fine is standard for such a violation at the Super Bowl.
Urlacher, 28, helped the Bears to qualify for the Super Bowl against Indianapolis, despite going through a season without a sack for the first time in his career.
He made three interceptions and 142 tackles, and was a Pro Bowl selection.
The newspaper also reported Urlacher was fined for drinking vitamin water and wearing a vitamin water hat other than one with a Gatorade logo during the media session in Miami.
