Stalker targets Wash. university gymnasts

SEATTLE, April 18 (UPI) -- At least eight members of the University of Washington women's gymnastic team have been the target of repeated phone calls from a potential stalker.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Wednesday that a police investigation began last week after the gymnasts began receiving threatening phone calls from an unknown male caller.

The stalking began when a 20-year-old student athlete was threatened by an unknown male on the phone, who described clothing she had recently worn.

Seattle and campus police were approaching the repeated calls as the likely work of one man.

At least one official from the college said Tuesday that female gymnasts typically become the targets of such individuals due to the attention that the sport places upon the athlete's body.

"When you're a female student athlete, you get a lot of attention that a typical college student may not receive," Associate Athletics Director Richard Kilwien told the newspaper. "(Gymnastics) tends to attract a little bit more of this than other sports."
