Nadal still winning on clay

MONTE CARLO, Monaco, April 18 (UPI) -- Defending champion Rafael Nadal extended his clay-court winning streak to 63 matches with a second-round victory at the Master Series-Monte Carlo in Monaco.

Nadal, seeded second this week, Wednesday dispatched Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-3, 6-1. He's won two French Opens and last year's Masters Series stop in Monte Carlo in the more than two years since he's lost a match on clay.

Third-seeded Nikolay Davydenko was beaten by Robin Soderling, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3; and fourth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez was ousted by Igor Andreev -- the last person to beat Nadal on clay -- 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. No. 9 seeded David Nalbandian retired at 7-5, 4-1, because of a back injury, allowing Philipp Kohlschreiber to advance.

Seeded players who won Wednesday included: No. 5 Tommy Robredo, who beat Arnaud Clement, 6-3, 6-2; sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic who topped Gaston Gaudio, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1; and seventh-seeded Ivan Ljubicic, who was a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), winner over Radek Stepanek.

Others winners were: 10th-seeded Tomas Berdych, No. 11 Richard Gasquet, No. 12 David Ferrer and 16th-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero.
