Cheruiyot wins Boston Marathon

BOSTON, April 16 (UPI) -- Kenyan Robert Cheruiyot on Monday won his third Boston Marathon in five years while Russian Lidiya Grigoryeva took the women's honors.

The nor'easter that has affected much of the Northeast caused the 111th Boston Marathon to be run in heavy rain and high winds and apparently affected the runners.

Cheruiyot's winning time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 13 seconds was the slowest since 1977. Last year Cheruiyot set a Boston Marathon record with a 2:07:14 timing. He won in 2003 in 2:10:11.

Kenyan James Kwambai was second in the men's division at 2:14:33. Kenyans Stephen Kiogora and James Koskei were third and fourth, respectively.

Grigoryeva finished with a time of 2:29:18 seconds and is the first Russian to win in 14 years. The 33-year-old was also the first non-Kenyan to win the event in eight years.

Latvian Jelena Prokopcuka was second among the women, finishing in 2:29:58. Madai Perez, of Mexico, was third and Kenyan Rita Jeptoo fourth.
