NHL: N.Y. Rangers 2, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, April 14 (UPI) -- Brendan Shanahan's third-period goal Saturday helped the New York Rangers beat Atlanta, 2-1, in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Shanahan was assisted by Sean Avery, who also scored the Rangers' other goal. Henrik Lundqvist had 27 saves -- 12 of them in the third period -- as the Rangers went up 2-1 on the Thrashers.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored, and goalie Johan Hedberg stopped 37 shots for Atlanta.

Game 3 is set for Tuesday in New York.
