Kerry Wood to avoid surgery

CHICAGO, April 14 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood does not need surgery on his ailing right shoulder.

General Manager Jim Hendry said doctors determined the veteran righthander has a "real good dose" of tendinitis, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday. Wood was examined Thursday by York Mets' orthopedic specialist Dr. Dave Altchek when the conclusion was made.

On the team's Web site, Hendry added that his ace starter will resume throwing in extended spring training at Mesa, Ariz., when he is able.

Wood was shut down after appearing in five innings during spring training. He then was sent to Mesa for rehabilitation.

Wood also decided against surgery last winter on his rotator cuff.

He has a lifetime record of 71-56 with an ERA of 3.68.

In 1,128 2/3 innings, the hard-throwing Wood has 546 walks and 1,299 strikeouts.

On Thursday, shoulder soreness forced Mark Prior to leave his latest start after two innings. He had been scheduled to throw 45 pitches or three innings, whichever came first.
