HOUSTON, April 14 (UPI) -- Second-seeded James Blake was a winner Friday in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston.
Blake beat eighth-seeded Juan Monaco, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

His opponent will be unseeded Mariano Zabaleta, who trounced No. 5 seed Jurgen Melzer, 6-1, 6-2.
Ivo Karlovic beat 2004 winner and third-seeded Tommy Haas, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
In the only quarterfinal that did not involve a seeded player, Albert Montanes of Spain ousted veteran American Vincent Spadea, 6-4, 6-4.
Montanes faces Karlovic in Saturday's other semifinal.
The tournament's eventual winner will earn $65,850.
