HILTON HEAD, S.C., April 13 (UPI) -- Ernie Els Friday surged to a three-shot lead after the second round of the PGA's Heritage Classic at Hilton Head, S.C.
The native South African shot 6-under 65 in the second round, with four birdies in his first five holes. He is 12-under 130 through 36 holes.
"The last two years, I haven't been where I think I should be," Els told The State about his game recently. "At times, I've been so frustrated that I didn't really want to talk to anybody. That's just the game -- sometimes it drives you a little crazy."
First-round leader Jerry Kelly shot 1-under 70 Friday, and is second at 9-under 133.
Fred Funk (67) and Stephen Leaney (68) are tied for third at 8-under 134, with Sean O'Hair (66) and Kevin Na (68) tied for fifth at 7-under 135.
Jim Furyk (144), Tom Lehman (144) and Bernhard Langer (145) missed the cut.
