Police brutality denied in soccer clash

ROME, April 5 (UPI) -- Rome Prefect Achille Serra denied reports of police brutality against Manchester United fans during a soccer game with Rome AS.

Police used batons to control supporters who reportedly charged them after Rome's first goal in a 2-1 game.

British newspapers and Manchester United fans have accused the Italian police of heavy-handedness and the club has asked the British government to look into the matter, ANSA, the Italian news agency, said.

But Serra says the police were just doing their job.
