Goestenkors leaves Duke

DURHAM, N.C., April 3 (UPI) -- Coach Gail Goestenkors told Duke officials Tuesday she would leave the school amid reports she would become the women's basketball coach at Texas.

Duke Athletic Director Joe Alleva said Goestenkors had informed him she would step down after compiling a 396-99 record over 15 years.

The Texas job has been vacant since Hall of Fame Coach Jody Conradt announced her retirement last month.

"During the last week and throughout her entire time at Duke, we addressed everything that Gail requested in order to remain our coach for the duration of her career," Alleva said. "In the end, it came down to her seeking a new challenge at this stage in her career and her life.

"We respect her decision and wish her the best of luck in her new role. We thank her for all of her years of service and the job she did while building our program."

Duke went 32-2 this season, falling to North Carolina State in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament and to Rutgers in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
