Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

PHOENIX, March 31 (UPI) -- Spring training ended for most Major League Baseball teams Saturday, and the list of players heading for the 15-day disabled list grew considerably.
Among the latest DL entrants are southpaws Randy Johnson (back) of Arizona, Mike Hampton (rib strain) of Atlanta and Kenny Rogers of Texas; shortstop Freddy Sanchez (knee) of Pittsburgh -- who is the National League's reigning batting champion -- and Toronto right-hander John Thompson (right-shoulder tendonitis).
They join Detroit catcher Vance Wilson (elbow), Texas closer Eric Gagne (back, elbow) and Milwaukee centerfielder Laynce Nix (rib strain) on the DL.
Rogers will miss 6-8 weeks after surgery Friday to remove a blood clot from his left arm.
