On the 18th and final hole, he drove his ball into a lake, but saved par by making a long putt.

Stuart Appleby, the defending champion, also placed his drive into the water, but took a double bogey, which destroyed an otherwise sterling last-day effort.

After a 3-under 69, Appleby finished tied for second with overnight leader Bubba Watson (72) at 14-under 274.

"I was pretty disappointed after my tee shot," Scott said. "It wasn't that bad, but it was the wrong side to hit it on. I was just happy to get it in."

Scott won $990,000.

Tommy Armour III (66), a Monday qualifier, was fourth at 13-under 275.
