Phelps gets sixth gold at Worlds

MELBOURNE, March 31 (UPI) -- Michael Phelps won the 100-meter butterfly final Saturday to capture his sixth swimming gold medal at the 2007 World Championships.

Phelps, who is looking to win eight gold medals at this event, came from behind to defeat Ian Crocker and finish the race in 50.77 seconds.

"That's how I won the Olympic medal," said Phelps after the race. "You have to nail the finish as best you can. I tried to get my hand on the wall and try to take it out in the first 50 as well."

Phelps will compete for two more gold medals Sunday, looking for the perfect eight-for-eight sweep at these championships.

Phelps did not break any records Saturday but Australia's 4 X 100-meter medley relay team did.

Fourteen-year-old Emily Seebohm, Leisel Jones, Jessicah Schipper and Libby Lenton won the gold medal in three minutes, 55.74 seconds -- and took 0.56 of a second off the previous mark set by the Australians at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, also in Melbourne.
