Tigers' Rogers has surgery for blood clot

DETROIT, March 30 (UPI) -- Detroit left-handed pitcher Kenny Rogers underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his throwing arm and will be lost to the Tigers for at least six weeks.

Rogers was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after complaining of a tired arm. It was expected he would miss his first turn in the Detroit rotation this season.

But subsequent examinations revealed the blood clot and Rogers underwent surgery repairing the axillary and brachial arteries Friday in Dallas.

While he was penciled in to start the Tigers' second game of the season -- next Wednesday against Toronto in Detroit -- he will now miss 6-8 weeks.

Rogers went 17-8 with a 3.84 earned run average last season with Detroit. He was also 3-0 and did not allow a run in 23 innings of pitching in the playoffs. Over 18 seasons, Rogers is 207-139 with a 4.19 ERA in 721 games.
