Foot injury ends Olowakandi's season

BOSTON, March 28 (UPI) -- Boston Celtics center Michael Olowokandi will miss the rest of the season because of a fractured bone in his left foot.

The eight-year veteran played in only 24 games due to the injury, averaging 1.7 points and two rebounds per contest.

He re-signed with the team as a free agent during the last off-season.

The seven-footer was a first-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1998, and has career averages of 8.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in 500 NBA games.

Olowokandi's best game of the season came against all-pro Tim Duncan March 17, when the Boston broke a 17-year losing streak against the Spurs in San Antonio with a 91-85 victory.

In that contest, he had eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots while playing 23 minutes.

In his absence, 6-foot-10 inch two-year veteran Kendrick Perkins has been able to develop more quickly.
