Carolina mascot hit by car at NCAA tourney

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 24 (UPI) -- A North Carolina student who plays the school's mascot was in critical condition after being hit by a car at the NCAA basketball tournament in New Jersey.

Jason Ray was struck Friday afternoon while crossing a street in East Rutherford, N.J. where the Tarheels were about to play USC in the Sweet 16 round of the tournament, the Charlotte Observer reported Saturday.

The Carolina senior has worn the costume of Rameses the Ram for three seasons. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was not charged and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident occurred.

The Tar Heels play Georgetown on Sunday at the Meadowlands.
