Houston Texans release David Carr

HOUSTON, March 23 (UPI) -- The Houston Texans gave up on quarterback David Carr Friday, releasing the player who has been the face of the franchise during its entire five-year history.

Carr was the first player ever drafted by the Texans and he started 75 games -- completing 60 percent of his passes for 13,391 yards and 59 touchdowns. But he was intercepted 65 times and was the victim of 249 sacks.

A year ago the Texans decided to stick with Carr and passed on the opportunity to draft fan-favorite Vince Young, who three months earlier had quarterbacked the Texas Longhorns to the NCAA national championship.

Carr will be replaced by Matt Schaub, who was acquired by the Texans Thursday from the Atlanta Falcons.

Houston also released running back Domanick Williams on Friday. Williams, previously known as Domanick Davis, is the team's all-time leading rusher with 3,195 yards. He spent the entire 2006 season on injured reserve with knee problems.
