Big surf contest a week away -- minus surf

PILLAR POINT, Calif., March 22 (UPI) -- Surfers are watching the calendar and the skies with their biggest contest a week away but no sea-churning storm in sight.

The surfing world gathers traditionally around now at Pillar Point, Calif., for the famous Mavericks Surf Contest.

But, this time, it's an "iffy" situation, MediaNews reports. No storms to make waves and a week from Saturday, March 31, is the deadline.

If the contest can't go on by then, the window may close until September. The deadline could be extended but April weather needed to stir up the waters is not expected.

"It's like having the Winter Olympics in August in Tahoe; it's probably not going to happen," says Jeff Clark, contest founder and director. Still, he's not giving up. There could be some more wintry weather on the way.
