VALENCIA, Calif., March 17 (UPI) -- Hale Irwin overcame two late bogeys Saturday to shoot 1-under 71, for a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the AT&T Champions Classic in Valencia, Calif.

He completed 36 holes at 9-under 135. Andy Bean (66) and Bobby Wadkins (67) are both at 136.

Irwin, who has the most wins in Champions Tour history with 45, has never finished better in this tournament than a tie for seventh in 2004.

Irwin, 61, has won five of the last six events he has led after 36 holes, including the MasterCard Championship at Hualalai, Hawaii, in January.

Tim Simpson matched Bean's 66 for the low round of the day, to move into a share of fourth at 7-under 137 with three-time champion Gil Morgan, Morris Hatalsky, Loren Roberts and Jim Thorpe.
