Indians' GM given contract extension

CLEVELAND, March 15 (UPI) -- Cleveland Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro has been given a contract extension that ties him to the American League team through the 2012 season.

Shapiro is entering his sixth season as Cleveland's general manager and executive vice president. He agreed to a five-year contract extension this week, the team said Thursday.

"We are extremely pleased with the leadership, direction, passion and pride Mark has instilled in the Cleveland Indians organization," Indians President Paul Dolan said. "It's crucial for Mark to remain in this executive role to ensure the continued success of the Cleveland Indians franchise."

Shapiro joined the Indians in 1992 in baseball operations and later was the club's director of minor league operations. He was promoted to vice president, baseball operations and assistant general manager and spent three seasons in the position from 1999-2001.
