TAMPA, Fla., March 11 (UPI) -- Brandon Wright had 16 points and four rebounds Sunday afternoon as eighth-ranked North Carolina beat N.C. State, 89-80, to win the ACC Tournament at Tampa.
The freshman forward was named tournament MVP.
UNC used a 10-2 run to close the first half for a 42-34 lead at the break, then opened the second half with an 8-2 outburst to build a 46-34 advantage with 18:06 left.
North Carolina State scored the next eight points and to come within 78-75, but ran out of gas in the late stages.
Wayne Ellington also scored 16 points while Tyler Hansbrough added 15 points and three rebounds for the top-seeded Tar Heels (27-6), who had not played in the title game since 1998.
Brandon Costner led N.C. State (18-14) with 29 points and three rebounds.
The underdog Wolfpack had beaten Duke, No. 2 Virginia, and No. 3 Virginia Tech to get to the final.
