Lundy of 'Fearsome Foursome' dead at 71

RICHMOND, Ind., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Former NFL defensive lineman Lamar Lundy, who was part of the Los Angeles Rams' "Fearsome Foursome," died this weekend at the age of 71.

Lundy, who plagued NFL offenses during the 1960s as a member of the Rams, died Saturday in Richmond, Ind., after a prolonged illness, The Los Angeles Times said.

Merlin Olsen, who teamed Lundy, Deacon Jones and Rosey Grier as the "Fearsome Foursome," remembered his former teammate as a strong man who never let his numerous ailments deter his optimism.

"He was a remarkable human being and a great friend and teammate," Olsen said. "He suffered through a great many physical ailments, but he kept his good humor in spite of all that."

While the 6-foot-7, 250-pound Lundy is typically seen as the least dominant member of the "Fearsome Foursome," he was nonetheless recognized as the anchor of the group.

Lundy is survived by two sons, Lamar III and Ronald; three daughters, Annie Carter, Tara Lundy and Vicki Wilbon; three brothers, Kenneth, Michael and Gerald; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
