Buffalo Sabres coach fined $10,000

NEW YORK, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff was fined $10,000 for comments made after his team's brawl with Ottawa Thursday, the National Hockey League said Saturday.

Ruff loudly protested a hit on Buffalo's Chris Drury by Ottawa's Chris Neil -- a collision that did not result in a penalty but did cause a gash on Drury's forehead that took 20 stitches to close.

A fight began that eventually involved all 12 players on the ice and more than 100 penalty minutes were handed out after the brawl.

After the game, Ruff defended his team's role in the fight by saying, "you can't respond any other way."
