FORT MYERS, Fla., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Curt Schilling said he will file for free agency after the 2007 season because the Boston Red Sox didn't extend his contract during spring training.
Schilling, speaking with WEEI-AM radio in Boston, said he met with Red Sox officials and was told the team would not decide on whether to offer a new contract until after the season.
"We talked yesterday and they have decided they're going to go more from a business standpoint," Schilling told WEEI. "They're not going to offer me a contract until after the season. I'm going to play out the season and file for free agency at the end of the year."
Schilling, a right-handed starter for Boston, was 15-7 with a 3.95 earned run average last season. He joined the Red Sox in 2004 and was 21-6 with a 3.26 ERA in helping Boston win the World Series.
In addition to Boston, he pitched for Baltimore, Houston, Philadelphia and Arizona over a 19-year career. Schilling owns a 207-138 record and 3.44 ERA.
