Li bumped from Dubai tournament

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Seventh-seeded Na Li was upset in opening-round play Monday of the $1.5 million Dubai Duty Free Women's Open tennis tournament.

Li took the first set but eventually fell to Eleni Daniilidou 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Sixth-seeded Patty Schnyder was also pushed to three sets in the first round but was able to come away with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3 win over Francesca Schiavone.

Also Monday, Ai Sugiyama held off Selima Sfar 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, Alicia Molik handled Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 6-4 and Maria Kirilenko defeated Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-0.

This week's top seeds are French Open champion Justine Henin, last week's Antwerp titlist Amelie Mauresmo, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Martina Hingis. Henin defeated Russian Maria Sharapova in last year's Dubai finale.

The tournament continues through the week with the eventual champion winning $231,080.
