Rangers' Shanahan leaves ice on stretcher

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- New York Rangers left wing Brendan Shanahan was carried off the ice on a stretcher Saturday night during the Rangers' 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Shanahan collided with the Flyers' Mike Knuble with 12:33 left in the third period. Knuble had to be helped off the ice by the Flyers' training staff, and is going to need surgery to repair a fracture to his right cheekbone and right orbital bone.

Shanahan, 38, was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, where X-rays and a CT scan turned out negative. Plans called for him to be held overnight at the hospital for further observation.

Shanahan has a team-high 28 goals to go with 26 assists this season.

"It's tough, but we're going to have to overcome that and play in the spirit of what he's all about anyway," said Rangers Coach Tom Renney. "Hopefully he won't be out too long."

Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said Knuble would be out indefinitely.

"We're going to have the surgery delayed a few days until the swelling goes down," he said.
