Canas wins the Brazil Open

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Guillermo Canas of Argentina surprised top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in straight sets Sunday to win the ATP Tour's Brazil Open at Costa do Sauipe.

The scores were 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

The victory gave Canas his seventh career title, and his first since the 2004 season.

He had served a 15-month ban after testing positive for a banned diuretic, and returned to the tour last September. An appeal in June 2005 led to a reduction from the original ban of two years.

"The match was really close with both of us playing very well (but) I played better the key points," Canas said.

Ferrero saw his losing streak in title matches grow to five, including events at Rotterdam, Vienna and Cincinnati.

This was just the second meeting between the two. Ferrero had won the first in three sets at the Miami Masters in 2005.
