China: No Olympic surcharge for Westerners

BEIJING, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Chinese officials say tickets for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics will be affordable and Westerners will not be charged more than anyone else.

"If Chinese and Westerners are charged different prices, it will not honor the Olympic spirit," Beijing Vice Mayor Liu Jingmin said in an interview aired on Beijing Television, China Daily reported.

More than 7 million tickets will go on sale this year.

Prices were published Nov. 29 on the official Web site of the Games. Seats for the opening ceremony will be priced as low as $22.50; and more than 58 percent of all tickets will be $13 or less, with the lowest ticket at $4.

Olympic officials are offering student tickets, about 14 percent of all tickets available in China, costing 64 cents for preliminaries and $1.28 for finals.
