Marcel Hossa scored at 11:32 of the period as New York took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist, while Ryan Hollweg and Sean Avery also scored once each for the Rangers, who stopped a four-game losing streak.
Tampa Bay goaltender Johan Holmqvist allowed four goals on 16 shots before being relieved by Marc Denis in the second period. Denis gave up one goal on eight shots for the Lightning, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
There were no power-play goals in five combined chances.
