Stadler starts fast at Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Craig Stadler shot 9-under-par 63 Friday to take the first-round lead at the Champions Tour's Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.

Stadler leads Mark James by one shot heading into Saturday's second round. He began his day on the 10th tee, made birdies at each of the first two holes, and then made five straight pars.

Before his day was done, he added four more birdies and had no bogeys.

Jay Haas and Loren Roberts -- who battled for Player of the Year honors in 2006 -- each shot 4-under 68. They were joined in eighth place by Brad Bryant, Jose Maria Canizares, R.W. Eaks, Dave Eichelberger, John Jacobs, Tom Jenkins and Wayne Levi.

Allen Doyle, the two-time defending champion at the U.S. Senior Open, is among those at 3-under 69. Nick Price, making his Champions Tour debut, opened at 1-under 71 and is tied for 33rd place.
