MIAMI, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Miami Heat guard Gary Payton was suspended without pay for Monday's game against the Charlotte Bobcats after verbally abusing officials last weekend.

Payton was ejected just before halftime of Miami's 117-98 win over the Milwaukee Bucks Saturday. He went on to berate official Mark Davis, apparently using obscenities, before leaving the court.

Payton was starting in place of regular point guard Jason Williams, who is sidelined with an abdominal strain. Rookie guard Chris Quinn made his first career start in Payton's place on Monday night.

Payton, 38, is averaging 5.6 points and 2.9 assists per game this season.
