Kuerten, 30, was making his 2007 debut this week after being limited to just one ATP match last year due to hip problems.

In other Day-1 action, fifth-seeded Peruvian Luis Horna beat Italian Alessio Di Mauro 6-1, 6-2 and Argentine Mariano Zabaleta defeated his countryman Juan-Pablo Guzman 6-3, 6-4.
