It was the second consecutive Australia title for the Swiss superstar for a total of three Melbourne wins.

The top-seed beat 10th-seeded Gonzalez 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours, 20 minutes at Rod Laver Arena.

Federer, 25, is now 10-0 overall and 3-0 in Grand Slam events against Gonzalez, the second Chilean to perform in a Grand Slam final.

Gonzalez, 26, had a pair of set points in the first set, but Federer canceled them out and went on to take the opening stanza in an easy tiebreak. Both players had their serve broken once in the first set, but the Chilean was unable to break Federer over the next two sets.

Federer had a 4-3 edge in the second set and never looked back. He claimed the stanza and broke Gonzalez for a 4-3 advantage in the final set en route to victory. Gonzalez staved off several game points in the seventh game of the third, but a determined Federer finally got his break and soon ended the competition.

Despite the loss, Gonzalez moved up to No. 5 in the world.

Barbaro suffers 'significant setback'

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Kentucky Derby-winner Barbaro had to be taken back to surgery in Pennsylvania because an abscess was giving him trouble on his right hind hoof.

His surgeon called it a "significant setback."

The colt had a cast replaced on his left hind foot Thursday at the Penn State School of Veterinary Medicine, and had new shoes put on his front feet Wednesday at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital in Kennett Square, Pa. He also had the abscess in his right hind hoof drained.

Chief of Surgery Dr. Dean W. Richardson said in a statement Barbaro was taken back to surgery Saturday "because we could not keep him comfortable on his right hind foot. That foot developed a deep subsolar abscess secondary to bruising when he went through a period of discomfort on the left hind foot. It is not laminitis but the undermining of the sole and part of the lateral heel region are potentially just as serious."

The hind foot has been placed in an "external skeletal fixation device" to give it a chance to heel.

"We will continue to treat Barbaro aggressively as long as he remains bright, alert and eating," Richardson said. "This is another significant setback that exemplifies how complex his medical situation remains because both hind limbs have major problems."

Barbaro was injured shortly after the start of the 2006 Preakness, fracturing three bones in and around his right hind ankle.
