Trump tries to woo U.S. Open

BEDMINSTER, N.J., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Real estate mogul and "The Apprentice" star Donald Trump wants the U.S. Open golf tournament to take place at his Bedminster, N.J., course.

Trump, who has already secured the 2009 Junior Amateur and Girls' Junior Amateur championships for his Trump National Golf Club, said he hopes the course will prove attractive to the pros, USA Today reported Friday.

"Literally every single aspect of (Bedminster) has been designed for the highest standards of the USGA," Trump said, referring to the governing body that runs the U.S. Open. "It's 20 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel. It's soft rolling hills in Jackie Kennedy horse country. It's designed for majors -- and I'd be honored to have them.

"We just got the juniors, girls and boys. Hopefully that's phase one," Trump said.

Trump said he also wants to attract the PGA Championship, the British Open and the Ryder Cup.

"The only thing that would stop Donald is the USGA being terrified he'll upstage the tournament by grandstanding -- which he probably will," said Eamon Lynch, senior editor of Golf Magazine. "There's no question Bedminster can handle a U.S. Open. But some people will oppose anything Donald Trump is involved in."
