Cowboys new coach naming on hold

IRVING, Texas, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys head coaching position remained open Friday as no decision was made on the status of Jason Garrett.

The former Cowboys quarterback was hired Thursday by team owner Jerry Jones for an unnamed position.

Jones indicated Garrett remains a candidate to succeed Bill Parcells, who announced his retirement Monday after four years as head coach.

Reports are that Dallas has received permission to speak with defensive coordinators Wade Phillips of San Diego and Gary Gibbs of New Orleans, as well as Norv Turner, the offensive coordinator for San Francisco.

Turner formerly was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator.

"The nature and timing of this hire is unique in that we were dealing with a limited window of time in which to talk to Jason about returning to Dallas," Jones said in a statement.

Garrett also was being considered for the offensive coordinator's post with new Miami Dolphins coach Cam Cameron.
