COL BKB: Clemson 74, Boston College 54

CLEMSON, S.C., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Cliff Hammonds scored 17 points Saturday afternoon to help the No. 16 Clemson Tigers post a 74-54 ACC rout of the Boston College Eagles.

Clemson won its first 17 games and had been the nation's last undefeated team before dropping a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference games. The Tigers are 18-2 overall and 4-2 in the league.

The loss was the first of the season in league play for Boston College (13-5, 5-1).

The Eagles led the first 11 minutes of the game but Hammonds connected on a three-point shot to give Clemson its first lead, 19-18, with about 8 1/2 minutes to play in the half.

The Tigers finished off the period with a 9-3 run for an eight-point lead at intermission, and Boston College didn't threaten in the second half.

James Mays had 14 points and Vernon Hamilton 13 to help Hammonds with the Clemson scoring.

Tyrese Rice scored 16 points and Shamari Spears had 14 for Boston College.
