SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Former Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus has been hired to coach the Fighting Irish quarterbacks, the university announced Friday.

Powlus was a four-year starter at quarterback for Notre Dame from 1994-97 and set 20 school records. He was the director of personnel development for Notre Dame football for the past two years.

The Fighting Irish also announced that Corwin Brown would be the team's defensive coordinator. He has been the defensive backs coach for the New York Jets for the past three seasons.

Powlus and Brown replace Peter Vaas and Rick Minter, respectively, who were fired after Notre Dame's 41-14 loss to Louisiana State in the Sugar Bowl.
