Panthers tab Lewis as secondary coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Tim Lewis, fired last week as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, has been hired a defensive secondary coach for the Carolina Panthers.

Lewis was defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers for four seasons before moving to the Giants in 2004. While the Steelers were among the NFL leaders in defense under Lewis, the Giants were 25th in the 32 team league in total defense last season.

"Tim's experience as both a player and a coach in the NFL provide him with sound knowledge of the defensive backfield," Carolina Coach John Fox said. "Our staff is familiar with him and we think he will make a strong contribution to our defense."

Lewis played four seasons with the Green Bay Packers and finished with 16 interceptions in 51 games.
