NHL: Toronto 3, Florida 2

SUNRISE, Fla., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- John Pohl's score gave Toronto a three-goal lead Thursday night and the Maple Leafs were able to hang on for a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Pohl's goal came in the second period, and it wasn't until a late apparent goal by the Panthers was waved off for a hand pass that Toronto had the game in hand.

Toronto took the lead with a first-period goal from Boyd Devereaux and made it 2-0 six minutes into the second on a goal by Chad Kilger. A short time later Pohl flipped a backhand shot into the Florida net.

The Panthers got on the board 1:12 into the third period with Gregory Campbell's tip-in goal and got to 3-2 when Ville Peltonen redirected a shot from Stephen Weiss for a score.

Florida went into the final minute trying desperately to score and apparently got the tying effort, but Martin Gelinas was called for a hand pass after he threw the puck down in the crease and had it go into the goal with 29.6 seconds to play.
